Quantum computing is an emerging technology with the potential to revolutionize various industries. IBM developed the IBM Quantum System One, the first self-contained quantum computer, which demonstrated the feasibility of packaging complex quantum equipment into a compact, freestanding unit. The Cleveland Clinic purchased this groundbreaking technology to become the first institution to dedicate a quantum computer to medical research and operate it outside of a lab setting, in a public space.
The design challenge was to create a visual language for the IBM Quantum System One that would make it approachable and engaging for the public. The objective was to balance its advanced, scientific nature with an inviting and reflective design that would spark curiosity and exploration among visitors.
To achieve this, we based the system's design on IBM's 2x grid and carefully selected materials that would encourage interaction and reflection. The system was installed in the Cleveland Clinic lobby, transforming it into an accessible and inspiring centerpiece for public engagement. We ensured that the design fostered transparency and encouraged learning, positioning the quantum computer not just as a piece of technology, but as a hub for community engagement and discovery.
The Quantum System One became a vibrant space for events such as lectures, gatherings, and quiet contemplation. Its design was widely praised for making complex technology feel approachable and engaging. In 2023, the project earned a prestigious Best of Show Red Dot Award, further validating its success in blending innovation with public accessibility.
